There’s a phrase I come back to often. A simple mantra that helps me recalibrate when life feels too busy or too overwhelming. It’s just two words: Win Today.
It’s a phrase that only works when we break it into its two parts.
What Does It Mean to Win?
For some people, winning means crushing a workout, hitting a new personal record, or sticking to a carefully planned nutrition protocol. That’s true for me sometimes. A long run, an hour of yoga, and a solid strength workout—that’s a win.
But not every day works like that.
Some days, winning looks like saying no to the donut in the break room. And other days, winning means not beating myself up for eating the donut anyway.
The truth is, winning is context-dependent. Your version of a win is going to look different from mine. It depends on your goals, your season of life, and what’s available to you today. The win is personal. It’s honest. And it requires that we know what we’re aiming for.
Once you’ve identified your direction—whether it’s building strength, growing in faith, spending more time with your family, or getting out of debt—you can begin to pursue it. Not in some perfect, all-at-once kind of way. But with grace and intention, step by step.
What About Today?
The second half of the mantra is just as important. Today reminds us that this is a daily pursuit. Not a someday goal. Not a future version of yourself that you’ll finally be proud of when you “arrive.” Today is the only day you get to work with.
Each morning you wake up, you are given a fresh chance. A clean slate. A new opportunity to choose who you’re going to be. And those small daily choices are where real change happens.
You can’t rewrite yesterday. And you can’t predict tomorrow. But you can shape what happens today. You can take action right now, even if it’s small.
And that’s where momentum is built.
Picture This
Think about one of those people movers at the airport—the flat escalators that help people move faster to their gate. Life can feel like walking against the flow of that conveyor belt. You have to push to make progress. And if you stop moving altogether, you slide backward. Instantly.
That’s why this mantra matters. Win Today helps you keep going. Not fast. Not perfectly. But forward.
How to Start Winning Today
Here are a few steps you can take right now:
-
Define your win. What does a win look like for you today? Be specific. Is it getting to bed on time? Drinking enough water? Saying no to distraction and yes to focus?
-
Name your direction. Remind yourself of your larger goal. Are you building strength? Cultivating peace? Growing closer to God? Keeping your priorities front and center helps clarify your daily choices.
-
Take one step. Not ten. Just one. One action that moves you forward, even if just an inch. Take a walk. Open your Bible. Prep a healthy lunch. Send that text. Whatever it is—do it today.
-
Let go of yesterday. If you messed up, release it. If you crushed it, let it go too. Today is a new opportunity. Don’t carry the weight of yesterday into it.
-
Repeat tomorrow. When you wake up tomorrow, say it again. Win Today. Then do it again the next day.
Remember, progress doesn’t need to be flashy or loud. It just needs to be real.
Show up. Keep going. Win today.
